As the 1990s drew to a close, LSC had emerged from a decade of expansion and consolidation with a strong national presence. Australia was recovering from recession, business confidence was returning and the security industry was becoming increasingly competitive. Rather than seeing this as a threat, LSC viewed competition as an opportunity to continually improve its products, service and support for customers.
During this period, Silca remained a cornerstone of the business. After more than two decades of partnership, the world-renowned Italian manufacturer continued to innovate in key cutting technology, reinforcing LSC’s position as Australia’s leading supplier of key blanks, key cutting machines and locksmith solutions. The enduring relationship with Silca reflected LSC’s commitment to sourcing the world’s best products for Australian security professionals.
Welcoming ABUS to the LSC Family
One of the most significant milestones of this era came in 1999 when LSC secured the exclusive Australian distribution rights for ABUS. Since its founding in 1924, the German manufacturer, whose name originates from August Bremicker und Söhne (August Bremicker and Sons), had earned a global reputation for quality, engineering excellence and product innovation.
When ABUS reviewed its Australian distribution in 1998, it was seeking a partner capable of expanding the brand’s presence beyond New South Wales and into the national locksmith market. LSC’s growing branch network, technical expertise and specialist focus on serving locksmiths made it the ideal choice.
The partnership proved to be a natural fit. ABUS complemented LSC’s philosophy of sourcing world-class brands and joined an already impressive portfolio that included Silca, Lockwood, HPC, ASP, S&G and BRAVA. More importantly, LSC maintained ABUS as a specialist locksmith brand, giving security professionals access to premium products without widespread distribution through the general hardware market.
A key contributor to the brand’s success was the ABUS 83 Series rekeyable commercial padlock. Designed specifically with locksmiths in mind, the 83 Series introduced features the industry had long been seeking, including simple rekeying, interchangeable cylinders, corrosion-resistant components and configurable key-retaining functions. Continuous product development and close attention to locksmith feedback quickly established the 83 Series as one of Australia’s most trusted commercial padlocks.
More than 25 years later, the partnership between LSC and ABUS continues to thrive. The brand remains synonymous with quality, innovation and reliability, reflecting LSC’s long-standing commitment to providing the industry’s leading security products.
As the new millennium approached, another major shift was beginning to emerge, electronic access control. While traditional mechanical security continued to dominate, LSC recognised that electronic locking technologies would play an increasingly important role in the future of the industry. Rather than rushing to market, the company adopted a measured approach, carefully evaluating emerging technologies and identifying solutions that would deliver genuine value to locksmiths and security professionals.
This forward-thinking mindset would shape the next chapter of LSC’s history, as the business expanded into manufacturing, electronic security and the rapidly evolving world of automotive transponder technology
