  • Smart Access Control for a Modern School | Yarrabilba State Secondary College
Yarrabilba State Secondary College is a progressive new school serving Logan City in southeast Queensland – a fast-growing corridor between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Since opening in 2020 with 250 students and 50 staff, the college has placed a strong emphasis on outdoor and project-based learning, with students frequently engaged in hands-on activities beyond the classroom.

01 The Challenge

At launch, the college relied on traditional locks and keys. But it quickly became apparent that this approach didn’t suit the dynamic nature of the school day. Teachers were often required to move between multiple buildings, many carrying up to seven separate keys. This was not only inconvenient – especially while also managing laptops and learning materials – but also costly and cumbersome when keys were lost or staff moved on.

Security was another concern. With Yarrabilba offering state-of-the-art sports and arts facilities to the local community after hours, a way to grant controlled access to external users without compromising the safety of students and staff was essential.

02 The Solution

To address these challenges, Yarrabilba implemented a Salto Space smart access system. Using programmable keycards and wristband fobs, the system gives staff access to the areas they need based on their role, and external users access to specific facilities only at set times.

The flexibility of the Salto system means cards and fobs can be rapidly issued, modified or deactivated. If a credential is lost, it can be decommissioned instantly – no need to replace physical locks. Issuing a new fob is fast, inexpensive, and handled in-house.

Beyond access control, the same credentials are used for printing, scanning, and other shared services – reducing the need for staff to juggle multiple devices or IDs. Salto’s audit trail feature also ensures school leadership can monitor who accessed which areas and when – a critical capability for managing both safety and transparency.03 Key Benefits

Ease of Use
Teachers simply tap their wristband or card on the lock – especially handy when their hands are full.

Convenience
No more bulky sets of keys. Just one card or fob does it all.

Multi-Functionality
The same credential is used for door access, printing, and more.

Low Maintenance
Lost fobs are easily deactivated and replaced, with no locksmith callouts or rekeying.

Improved Security
Salto ensures only authorised users can access specific areas, with visibility into access events.

Support for Community Use
External groups can use the facilities securely after hours, without putting the rest of the school at risk.

Deputy Principal Janelle Whatmore sums it up
“Our staff love the Salto system, and from a management perspective, this system is really great and easy for us to use. We can control access, easily replace fobs when they’re lost, and can track and monitor who has accessed which areas.”
