Please provide a short personal biography about yourself.

My names Anthony I’m 26 years old. I started my school-based apprenticeship when I was 15 after completing work experience through Rodd Locksmiths in Ballarat.

I first became interested is giving locksmithing a go after meeting a locksmith who today is one of my best mates and I’ve worked alongside him pretty much every day for the last 10 years.

I met him at an archery shoot in Ballarat when him and his son came out for a day to have a crack at archery. At that time, I was looking for somewhere to do work experience and he said to drop in and speak to the Rodd boys and that’s pretty much how my locksmithing career started, and I still work for the same company today!

What are some of the skills and abilities necessary for someone to succeed as a Locksmith?

A keen eye for detail is something I’ve learned to be very valuable in locksmithing. Whether it would be impressioning keys or trouble shooting locks you need to know how things work and what to look for.

Patience is also a key to being a good locksmith. It’s always too easy to grab a drill or give up rather than persisting and being rewarded with a successful job knowing that you used your skills and did it right.

Having the ability to adapt to all types of locksmithing from automotive to commercial, safes and domestic to be a good locksmith I think you need to have an all-round knowledge to get you through any situation.

But it takes a truly great locksmith to combine those skills with empathy, integrity, and genuine care for the people we serve.

What key issues do you think will affect the Locksmith industry in the coming decade and how do you think these should be approached?

The more technologically advancements we have is going to make it harder for locksmiths to trouble while and maintain knowledge on those types of locks such as biometric security. This will require not just general locksmithing knowledge but technical skill as well.

I think stricter licensing and certification needs to be looked at more as there are way too many unqualified people posing as locksmiths. This will protect clients from being scammed and stop giving qualified locksmiths a bad name.

The lack of people looking at locksmithing as a potential career choice is definitely going to affect the industry. New locksmiths will need to be trained in electronics and software as well as mechanical skills.

Tell us why you should be Australia’s best young Locksmith.

I’ve worked hard for the last 10 years and learned a great deal about the industry not only in work hours but have always studied and practiced my skills in my own time to better myself as a locksmith.
I have knowledge in all areas of locksmiths and have been given the opportunity to practise skills through the work that’s been given to me. I’m always adapting and learning new skills that will help me in the future.

I’m always willing to give anything a go and learn new skills of people around me.
